The top is cut from burl walnut, and its figure follows no repeating order: rings crowd in one place, then loosen into small flecks, so no two tops share the same figure. A near-black band runs along one long edge, marking the border of that map, and a fine line in the same colour cuts halfway across the surface. Where the edge curls inward, the gap is filled with a milky pale-green resin, closer to frosted glass than to water. The polish leaves the grain looking wet, so the swirls deepen as light moves over the top, while rounded corners and a softly domed edge keep the slab soft under the hand. A single carved shaft carries it all, sinking into the solid wood base plate through a soft swelling and thinning as it rises, as though smoothed by hand. The offset sets the balance: the top opens out to one side while the base counterweights it. Beside a chair, a surface with easy room for a cup and a book, warm red-honey in tone, becomes the point the eye returns to from where you sit.
