On a bar stool the body perches instead of sinking in, so weight lands on a small area and a flat seat gathers the pressure in one place. The seat is therefore carved from solid walnut into a saddle: the middle dips just enough to take the hips into their own bed, and the side edges lift so the outer line of the thighs stays where it should. Front and back edges follow the same carving, curving away and thinning towards the tips, so the top reads as a flowing surface rather than a thick slab. It is built up from solid staves of differing tone set side by side, some almost black in the grain, others close to honey, with the figure running across the seat. Four legs taper downwards and splay a little, while the horizontal and diagonal stretchers between them take the play out of a tall frame. With no back, it pushes right up to the counter line, and the matt satin finish shows the dark walnut without gloss. Line two or three of them up and the island's run carries on unbroken.
