You can count the lines that make this design: a half-circle on the floor, two slim brass uprights rising from it, and one horizontal bar crossing between them as a footrest. The flat profiles carry an aged antique-gold finish whose patina darkens and lightens across each face, so no two surfaces read quite alike. Above that open frame sits the only solid volume in the piece, a seat carved from solid walnut with a scooped saddle centre and a front edge that thins into a soft wave. Honey-toned grain and deep brown bands run side by side through the wood, following the curves of the carved surface so the seat reads differently from each side. Having no back, the stool tucks under the counter and gives the floor in front of the island back to the room. Walnut and brass belong to the same warm register, so the two materials continue one another instead of competing. In a kitchen where few things are placed and each one counts, this stool holds its line without raising its voice.
