The character of this piece gathers in one continuous band of wood that begins at the back, widens across the shoulder line and narrows again as it turns into the arms and drops onto the front legs. Between that band and the seat the frame is left largely open, interrupted only by two slender uprights, so the wall and daylight behind the chair stay visible. Darker figured streaks ripple across the pale golden crest rail, and every joint is softly rounded so the profile reads as one line. A generously filled, gently domed seat pad in a mink tone sits inside the curved wooden frame, leaving a fine shadow line beneath its edge, its plumpness set against the slimness of the frame. The legs are round in section, tapering towards the floor and splayed just enough to hold the balance without adding bulk. At the head of a dining table, opposite a desk or in a living-room corner, it settles in without claiming the floor. What it adds to a room is space to breathe rather than one more mass.
