Set flush into the upper face of each armrest is a narrow brass plate, placed exactly where a hand comes to rest and drawing the eye to the joint just behind it. There the arm supports are carved from darker, strongly figured wood and hollowed underneath into a curved opening, then meet the paler legs and rails through finger joints that were left visible rather than concealed. The back is a single, gently concave panel that widens towards its upper corners and seems to hang free above the seat, its dark centre held within a lighter frame. The cushion below is covered in a pale blue-green cloth with a soft mottled pattern, a cool note answering the honeyed warmth of the timber. The legs taper towards the floor and the rear pair rakes slightly outward, giving the low body a settled stance. Draw it up to a dining table, a small writing corner or a quiet spot for reading, and it holds its place in each.
