What gives this chair its character is not the wood but the space the wood leaves empty. The backrest is shaped as an asymmetric oval ring, broader across the top and narrowing as it descends, and because nothing fills it the wall, window or view behind remains part of the picture. The two ends of the ring do not stop at the seat rail; they carry on past it to the floor as the rear legs in a single line. Arched openings under the seat repeat the same idea lower down, so the body reads as flowing lines rather than a closed mass. The front legs start thick beneath the frame, taper downwards and meet the floor on a small rounded end. At the crest the grain does not run straight: it swirls in wide rings around a small knot, and the joins to either side read as distinct diagonal lines. In the middle of all that openness, the blue upholstered seat is the single filled surface the eye rests on. Around a dining table it becomes a way of sitting that is present without taking up room.
