Four long boards are stepped up between two solid uprights to form this shelving system, open at the back, sides and front. Each tier keeps the tree's own outline along its front edge, so wavy swells and dark bark traces give every board a different profile. Under each one sits a bracket carved from a single piece into a stepped, zigzag silhouette, thick enough to pass the load down to the upright while sharpening the way the tiers seem to hang in air. A matte satin finish draws out the wood's reddish-brown tone and the grain running the length of each plank without adding gloss. The bays are tall and wide, taking deep bowls and stacked books as easily as boxed goods, and the thickness of the boards means a full shelf is no concern. Fixing holes are set into both uprights, so the frame stays on a single plane against the wall. In a living room it reads as a display wall; in a boutique or cafe the same skeleton becomes four rows of goods on show.
